Today's eye test....

Ok we got to Billings about 10pm last night. Ethan beat us by about an hour or so. The hospital let us stay in a family suite. It was a nice room right down the hallway from Ethan that they allow parents to stay in with their baby the last few nights they are in the hospital. So we got up early this morning because we were told the eye doctor would be there at 8am. So we were there and it was 9 and still no doctor. Mark fell asleep in the chair since we only got 7 hours of sleep and he was still needing to catch up on sleep from the day before. So I went to take a shower and when I went back to Ethan's room at 10 the doctor was there shortly after. He did Ethan's eye exam and told us.... drum roll please.... they look good! Wait... what? They look good? We knew that he may not need the surgery when we got here but we weren't expecting him to say his eyes looked good! He said that they are barely stage 2. He thinks that what happened was his eyes started to get bad but then has regressed and are now better. He wants to take a look at them again on Friday to make sure though. So we will be in Billings until Friday afternoon for sure. Good news though... no surgery right now.

Ethan has started to reflux a lot though. Sunday G.F. changed Ethan's feeding tube so that it went into his stomach instead of bypassing it. This is a step towards getting off continuous feeds and be able to get just regular feedings and then we will work on feeding from a bottle and of course breast feeding. Well the doctor felt that they should do a GI test to see what was going on for the reflux. They said he did really well for the test and they had even turned down his nasal canula to 2 liters and 23% oxygen which is really awesome. Later though he dropped his heart rate many times so they turned him back up to 3 liters until tomorrow. They also have a pediatric lung specialist looking at him to make sure his lungs are not causing any issues. G.F. doesn't have one of these specialists so as long as we are here... why not?

Of course my mom came to visit with us today since it is only an hour and a half away from her. We did lunch and some shopping. You know... specialty shops that we don't have in G.F. I am sure we will get another visit from her and my aunt before we leave. Mark will probably leave me on Thursday and we will see if he will come back down after his eye test on Friday. Oh and here is a scary thought.... last night the nurse was talking to us and said that Ethan probably will go home in 2-4 weeks! What? As little as 2 weeks! She obviously doesn't know us... how do they plan on teaching us how to be parents in 2 weeks?!?!? I did get the tree painted on his nursery wall before we headed to Billings so good thing the walls are done ;) I can't wait until he gets to come home but it is a little scare too since there is a chance he will have to go home on a monitor and/or oxygen. So for now we play the waiting game... again. We will chill in Billings until Friday and see what happens then. We are staying in the Ronald McDonald house in Billings while we are here and it is pretty nice.

  5. Wow good news all over the place!!!! No eye surgery! and good eyes are GREAT! and I think you got it right... have the specialists look at him while he's there. Another second third fourth look can't hurt him!
Wow going home!!!! I bet you thought the day would never come! Can you believe it, it's officially in the plans!!! YAY!
As far as training you to be parents, I think you're on your own there. But I think you'll do GREAT! You'll learn quick!

About Me

This blog started as a hobby for many reasons. It later became a way to keep the family up to date on our micro preemie baby, Ethan. Now as Ethan is nearing the 8 year mark with a little sister of 5 years I am finding a new reason to document on this blog.

Last year we were told by the school that Ethan had cerebral palsy, a blindspot and dyslexia. That is what started it all. I started taking him to doctors to find out what was going on and why this hasn't been discovered before now. In April 2017 we were told that he has executive functioning disorder. What the heck is EFD I thought?!?! After the doctor explaining it to us he basically said that if we don't start making changes now he could fall into the ADHD or possibly the autism category. Ok... so now what? What can we do?!? Well this blog is my way of documenting it all not only for me but also to help others find their way thru similar situations.
