I woke up this morning to and called the nurse to see how Ethan had done throughout the night. I was expecting a good report because he had been doing so well the last 2 days. She started out with "Ethan didn't have a good night last night." What! What could have happened! She went on to tell me that at 3am he dropped his stats and then he dropped his heart rate. I thought OK well he has done this before. She continued and said that they did everything they could and they just couldn't get his stats back up. They air bagged him (meaning they put the bag over his nose and mouth to give him oxygen) and that just didn't work so they had no choice but to intubate him. Not only is he on the ventilator but they had to stop his feedings and put him back on his fluids. They don't have any idea as to why it happened. They did tests and everything looks fine. They think it might have been a one time thing where he tightened up his airways and just couldn't breath. They are giving him some different medications to help him breath. They are also trying to set the ventilator settings to what a sipap does to see if he can tolerate it before they extubate him and put him on the sipap. He has what is called a strider which is a sound that he makes that makes him sound like an old man is the best way I can describe it. I think they told me this was caused from being on the ventilator for so long that his air passage way is swollen.
So after talking to the nurse I called Mark to tell him everything. He didn't answer. I called again and again. He still didn't answer after a hour. This isn't like him. I started to get bad thoughts in my head... what if something happened to him? Who can I call to go and check on him? I talked to him last night before I went to sleep and he was going in the hot tub with a beer... what if something happened in the hot tub?!?!? I called our neighbor to see if she would go and check on him but she didn't answer. I called Mark again. He answered! I was so happy to hear his voice! He said that he was sleeping and he wasn't feeling well. He thinks he has been hacking up a lung this morning because what he thought was dirt in the hot tub might be mold! Aaahhh! We planned on going this weekend to get some cleaning stuff for it. I have no idea what it looks like as I have not been able to use it since we bought the house. Now I just have to pray that he takes care of himself and gets it checked out before it causes any issues!

Ethan is looking fabulous! What a sweet little munchkin! It sounds like the docs are starting to figure him out...good call on the acid reflux situation. Seems like the medication is doing some good...
ReplyDeleteBad news about the mastitis! Good thing you were on top of it. It's amazing how quickly those anitbiotics start to work.
We are always thinking about you guys!Ethan...keep those stats up! You can do it little man!
Lots of love,
Maegan and David
Leah... you had my heart pounding there for a sec!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad he is ok... but I hope those little episodes stop soon.
As I am sure you do as well.
Lol I have to laugh about you worrying about Mark the way you do, because I do the SAME THING! I'll call Matt or like he won't call me when he normally does, and I instantly assume the worst. I'm such a worry wart!
I hope Ethan get his breathing thing down soon, for his sake and yours and Marks. Mark said he just needs to get bigger and stronger, and I hope he is right!
Thanks for the adorable picture!!!!
