Monday... nurses!

So today I got to the hospital and just in time for his 8:30 cares. I sat in the room waiting for the nurse to come by for cares and update me on how he did last night. Well there was a really old lady that just peaked in the room to look at the monitor twice but never said anything. So then she came in again. I gave her some milk to freeze and said that I needed some more labels (we need to label all the milk so it goes to the right baby of course ;) and she said oh yeah there were some here on the counter (in Ethan's room where I spend a lot of my time these days) but I threw them because I don't like garbage left around. I was just so thrown back by it and thought WOW! So then I asked if she would be his nurse for the day and she said well yeah sort of and I am only on til noon (whew... thank goodness for that!) Luckily they changed nurses around (they normally don't but they were short I think for a few hours) and yeah she wasn't Ethan's nurse anymore! Another mom had warned me about her but told me to take her with a grain of salt. She said that she has been retired a couple times but keeps coming back to work.

So after I got over being all shook up about that they came in to do his echo on his heart. Well the lady came in the room right when I was starting to pump (there is a curtain in the room so tht I have privacy from the hallway... if that makes sense). Anyway so the lady asked me if there were gowns in the room. Of course I didn't know and I was kind of wondering if she was looking for a gown for me and it bothered her that I was pumping while she was in the room. Nope, she was looking for a gown for herself. Yep not sure why she would be asking me! So then she looks at the incubator and says "ok where is the brake on this thing?" because she wanted to move it a smidge. So then she starts to push buttons! Next thing I know the top of the incubator is being elevated to the ceiling! I was freaking out! She says to me "would you push the nurse button?" So I pull the pumps off my boobs (EEK!) and jump out of my chair (another EEK... still not recovered!) and run to push the nurse button as she yells down the hallway for a nurse! So then I realize I am up and out from behind the curtain with my boobs just hanging out there. So I pull my shirt down only to realize I just got 2 wet spots on my shirt. Two nurses rush in and are very calm. They show her how to lower it and ask her what she was trying to do. In the meantime the idiot.. aka Echo Tech had thrown a little dry wash clothe on Ethan so that he would stay warm. Well I guess when the top lifts like that it starts pushing warm air down so it was fine. The other part that was scary though is when the top stopped moving there was a silver box that was underneath it that opened up which got me worried that something was going to shoot out of it! I asked the nurse if the lady was new and she said that she has been here for like 6 months. Well lady... if you don't know what you are doing... don't come around my baby!

So after calming down from that Ethan decided to drop his heart beat a few times which caused me to jump up and down from my chair all nervous like! Later Mark came because it was his Friday and there was a meeting for new parents in the NICU. Once we were done with the meeting we went back to Ethan's room. There were 2 nurses in there working on him and... they had the top lifted to the ceiling and the silver box open! I wasn't concerned this time because it was obvious they new what they were doing. Well they had it open because they had to intubate him again! Ugh! I don't think I can handle this some days! That's another step backward. Forward step, backward step, forward step and it just continues! This is totally normal for a baby his age but it's just so hard to handle. At least I will have Mark with me the next couple days ;)

As far as the heart goes the echo test today did show that there was still a small hole in it. We asked what that meant and they said that they are hoping that it will close soon. If it doesn't they will try to get it to close with medicine first before we start talking about surgery. I am really hoping surgery is not going to be the answer because that would be REALLY hard... ha like what we are dealing with already is not hard enough!

  2. WOw Leah! Just do you know you can request that a certain nurse or echo tech not care for Ethan. It is your call, and if you don't trust them, I would! Just let someone know you want to talk to the Manager of NICU and request that certain people don't work with him. It might make you feel better.

Don't worry about the steps backward... we all have to take steps backward in life to get going forward.... just think of it like when you step back a couple steps so that you can get a running start. ;) I know it's really hard to see such a little baby not feel well and take steps back, but God is in Control and he knows what you can handle. You must be a strong person, because you can handle all this! I have been praying not only that God make Ethan big and Strong and get him through the rough times, but also that he strengthen you and mark to Trust him in both the good and the bad times.

I really hope that the "little hole" closes. Maybe it's working its way there. So keep me updated.
Enjoy your days with Mark, I'll try and call you guys later today or later this week!

    Love you

Holy cow Leah! You are being so good through all of this. I would not have been able to keep my mouth shut to that nurse. Your boobs "just hanging out there" to funny. I bet that was a sight. You crack me up. Everytime I read your blog, I am laughing and crying through the whole thing. I can't wait to see you post this blog at Ethan's graduation.

I am so glad you and Mark have one another. I am planning to be there May 4th. Just another shoulder for you to lean on.

    Love and miss you all,
    Mom and Grandma J.

About Me

This blog started as a hobby for many reasons. It later became a way to keep the family up to date on our micro preemie baby, Ethan. Now as Ethan is nearing the 8 year mark with a little sister of 5 years I am finding a new reason to document on this blog.

Last year we were told by the school that Ethan had cerebral palsy, a blindspot and dyslexia. That is what started it all. I started taking him to doctors to find out what was going on and why this hasn't been discovered before now. In April 2017 we were told that he has executive functioning disorder. What the heck is EFD I thought?!?! After the doctor explaining it to us he basically said that if we don't start making changes now he could fall into the ADHD or possibly the autism category. Ok... so now what? What can we do?!? Well this blog is my way of documenting it all not only for me but also to help others find their way thru similar situations.
